In 2009, the people in Madagascar were part of political crisis within their own country. Early 2009 a coup d'atat happened when there was a political opposition movement lead by Antananarivo mayor, Andry Rajoelina. It reached its climax on March 11, 2009 when Rajoelina was declared the president of the High Transitional Authority of Madagascar. This lead to the international community immediately contemned the leader and his ascension as unconstitutional. All of this undid much of the progress from before. Many protests broke out after the political opposition movement. After the financial support and foreign investments stopped and the country fell into one of the worst economic crises in its history. Thanks to the mediation efforts by former Mozambian President Joaquim Chissano and the acceptance by all belligerent parties of a road map for ending the crisis, two-round presidential elections were held and Hery Rakotoarimana was sworn into office. Therefore ending this five year battle within the country. |
